I don't generally make myself a slave to these crazy blog games but my friend over at can't find normal just verbally "tagged" me asking me to post the first 10 songs that show up on my iTunes shuffle, and since I'm on vacation right now it seemed an easy way to keep the blog active even when I have little to say that doesn't involve sunburn. Interesting, Jeff Coutts in my car right now and that's the only place I listen to music.
On a side note I can't believe you gave Transformers 1 star, that was an entertaining movie in every way. I loved it. Don't become too synical about movies that you can't enjoy a kids action movie now and again.
well, i was thinking i should give it 2 stars, because, while it wasn't good, it wasn't as bad as spiderman 3, so yeah, you're right. but as a movie it didn't scratch me where i itch, and that isn't because I'm cynical i don't think. sure, the f/x were good, but this gets old, and even then half of the special effects seemed like a cop out from showing us anything of the actual transformation. and the 1/2 hour fight scene at the end was nothing new, and i'm tired of fight scenes, they bore me. but I did enjoy some of the cinematography and funny stuff, and some of the scenes were cool, so it is worth 2 stars. which in my books means "fair", rather than "poor"
Fair enough, I clearly liked it a lot more than you but your complaints are fair. I don't agree on the transforming though, how many times can they pull back and show the transformation? It happened enough for my taste and the mid flight transforming by Starscream was the coolest thing I've ever seen in a movie.
I also disagree on the fight scene, though it was a bit much (Bay's stuff always is) there's no way you can claim you've seen that before in my opinion.
I'm going to see it again again asap.
i think i must have missed the mid-flight transform because i have no recollection of it, and therefore of its greatness. i think you are exaggerating, because there was nothing in this movie that came close to the awe of the first time you saw the snowwalkers in empire, or the dinasaurs in jp, or the kong dinosaur fight in kk, or even the bob barker fight scene in happy gilmore.
of course i haven't seen THAT fight scene before, but really it was just a compilation of others. fight scenes are old hat. there are only a few that really do anything new anymore. the last original one was the afformentioned kong dinosaur fight. or maybe the one in the new bond, but it was more of a chase scene. i thought the transformers one was fairly boring, and unjustified. i had little idea why i was supposed to care who won. it reminded me of narnia actually, you had to know the story beforehand or you likely wouldn't care at all.
the more i talk about this movie the more i consider notching it back to one star! that kid was pretty funny though. wasn't he in dodgeball?
You should feel ashamed to have only given this movie 2 stars. The mid flight transformations happened more than once but my favorite one was when Starscream went back and forth during the big fight.
I don't know why you feel you couldn't pick a side, the deceptacons were trying to take over the earth and the autobots were trying to save humanity. Pretty clear good and bad there methinks.
And yes, I do think the action sequences in Transformers at least equal all the examples you gave above. Megatron ripping Jazz in half, Optimus and Megatron going toe to toe. The acrobatic moves in the streets... I could go on. Not only was it a great sequence it was true to the spirit of the fights in the cartoon, just with better CGI.
Sorry Jon, we're going to have to agree to disagree on this one. I think anything less than 3 stars for this movie is way too critical.
too critical? or we just don't like and appreciate the same things.
maybe i'm old, but i didn't catch or care about any of the fx you are describing. once you've shown me an amazing transformer in the first scene with the power to emit shockwaves, it makes little sense to me later why they must engage in hand to hand combat and typical chases. all this extra ability and machinery and it comes to that.
and the decepticons, did they want to destroy humanity? i thought i only knew that from the cartoon? and is that even the case? again, i must have missed it, as it would seem that the plot of this one was advanced merely by dialogue fillers.
and what was the deal with the cube? i never understood anything about this cube. it seemed like a throwback to another 80s trend: the rubix. it was like they were hinting at some sort of borg reality in order to save themselves the effort of having to build any sort of actual menace to the story.
this movie was eye-candy. i went and spent $8 with a friend and that's fine. but it wasn't worth more than 3 stars in my books, any more than a snickers really compares with a full course meal.
but of course, you and i have different taste in movies, at points.
I think you need to see it again, the allspark (or cube) was well explained in the opening narration and at other points in the movie as well.
No doubt this movie was mostly eye candy and maybe some the plot was a bit inside the beltway for those who are familiar with the cartoon but I don't think it was as hard to follow as you're implying.
The theatre I was in applauded at the end and I with them.
i am sure glad my theatre didn't applaud. i would have ralphed.
